ALESSIO

ALESSIO is the second stage of Melma, the year-long project that Nico Vascellari (born in Vittorio Veneto in 1976) conceived for the city of Florence, inaugurated last June with a solo exhibition at Forte Belvedere, open until October 8 2023.

In Rome, a young man whistles outside a bar, imitating the songs of birds. Time and life around him seem to flow peacefully; a woman enters and exits with groceries, cars move, people talk, have coffee, and enjoy croissants. In Florence, "Alessio" by Nico Vascellari is a choreographic action that involves over thirty performers within the magnificent Salone dei Cinquecento of Palazzo Vecchio, decorated in the 16th century to celebrate the power of Cosimo I de' Medici and Florence's achievements under his leadership. Here, one's gaze moves along the walls, amidst frescoes and sculptures crowded with bodies in action. While the eyes discover continuous details among hundreds of triumphant fighters or duels to the death, contemplation becomes an experience engaging all the senses as the shouts of that multitude of men resound. Alessio is this and much more; it is a work born from those images but not only that. It revolves around gesture and its instinctiveness; it is a young man whistling outside a bar.

The performance has taken place on October 3 in the Salone dei Cinquecento and is realized with the support of the 12th edition of Italian Council, a project by the Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity of the Ministry of Culture. The action will later become a video work that will become part of the collection of the Museo Novecento and will be presented in 2024 at Haus der Kunst in Munich and the MSU in Zagreb.
